Unchaahi: against Female Foeticide in India

Friday, November 21, 2008

Just today's news.

These are front page stories on the Times of India.

Widows are bought and sold like cattle just a few hundred kilometres from Bangalore.
Unbelievable though it may sound, widows are treated like cattle, are 'bought and sold' in a custom treated as sacred by the 'Handi Koracha' community. Worse, local authorities well aware of the issue are not lifting a finger to help the victims of this de-humanising tradition.

Woman's body found in a trunk.

Young woman burnt to death in Lucknow.

This is just a very random sample of what the newspaper said today. Are we even surprised?
And, unfortunately, do we even care?

Please post your views here. I know it is sad, these are random things, the media has to report what happens, but what does it say about us as a people?
.

  • But we are apathetic to so much happening, not only this.
This is just a part of our attitude now. Bomb blasts, airplane crahes, nothing moves us. What is the life of these poor women that we should be bothered?

  • I totally agree with Mampi-we have become so attuned to all this that nobody bothers if it is first page, middle page or last page news. We sit up and speak against it if only somebody known to us is harmed. The question is -Why this callousness? As for the people who indulge in these crimes-they are sick!!!Stringent measures are needed to punish them-only then future criminals can be disuaded.

  • the news paper is full of these stories... its not a news paper anymore its a depression tool... and frankly most of the people have become so attuned to that we just brush it aside....

  • OMG What the hell do they think they are doing in that country. Don't the men have mothers sisters and daughters of their own. I am sorry but I don't quite know how to handle this emotion inside me. Um I live on a tiny Island in the south pacific called 'Eua and don't have Tv, the internet is a new thing here a Well I'm not apathetic that's for sure. I might have to come back again in a couple of days when I've got my head around this and comment more intelligently.
